The Mexican livestock sector plays a very important role, both economically and socially, as it contributes 11.6 percent of employment in the country's entire agricultural and fishing sector.
Annual livestock production is 6.3 million liters of poultry protein, 12 million liters of milk from cattle and goats, 1.6 million liters of pork, 2.1 million liters of beef, goat and sheep meat, which contribute more than 461 billion pesos annually to the Mexican economy.
There are almost 600 plants producing balanced animal feed in Mexico. Total production is distributed as follows:
- 48.8 % is used for poultry farming;
- 16.0 % to pig farming;
- 11.1 % to cattle;
- 15.7 % to the dairy sector.
To a lesser extent, but no less important, commercial pet food production increased from 860,000 tons to 1.1 million tons in the last five years.
Mexico is among the top eight feed producing countries in the world, along with China, the United States, Brazil, Russia, India, Spain and Turkey. Together, they produce 55% of the world's feed production and contain 59% of the world's feed mills.
